The Warratahs: Runaway Days

I’m more open to music’s older rootsy reaches than Roger and I’m very taken with the newish Warratahs album, Runaway Days. Singer/guitarist Barry Saunders is a terrific songwriter, now singing poignantly with a country crack in his vocals and an older, wiser confidence, like New Zealand’s Paul Kelly really. I like the way he talks about rain and hanging out the washing. It’s timeless stuff, but with great chord changes, a fantastic lumbering groove and wild gypsy fiddle by sidekick Nik Brown. Outstandingly good songs, all Saunders originals, save a brave and rather good cover of Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire, done as a duet with ex-Chills drummer Caroline Easther.
