Grant-Lee Phillips: The Narrows

Grant-Lee Phillips is notable in my musical memory for Fuzzy his terrific 1993 album with his old band Grant Lee Buffalo, who were mostly him (voice, guitars, songs) and a bass player and a drummer. His new solo album The Narrows is a classy collection of new songs, haunted by personal history and boasting big melodies floating on a rootsy wall of sound, sometimes maybe a little too close to the middle of the road, but still deep and dark enough to stay interesting. Phillips anguished voice helps too. Nice, though not essential.
